The overall aim of this poster series is to:

  • Demystify and clarify what biotechnology is and how it affects us;
  • Educate on the science behind specific biotechnology applications; and
  • Present balanced and factual information on the benefits and risks of biotechnology applications, thereby promoting public understanding, awareness and discussion.

These high-energy, graphic-intensive education materials relating complex information to the everyday life experiences of South Africans are a powerful tool for demystifying the multifaceted field of biotechnology. This campaign hopes to make the field of biotechnology widely accessible and understood, allowing South Africans to make informed decisions with knowledge of the hazards and benefits of this powerful technology.

Since being made available, these poster sets have been distributed to schools and educators at public events such as SciFest, National Science Week, exhibits etc as well as in response to individual requests from around the country and worldwide. Requests have also been made to translate them into other (non-South African) languages.

If you would like to receive copies of these posters or to request permission to reproduce them at your institute/organization while ensuring due credit is given to the PUB programme and the Department of Science and Technology, please contact info@pub.ac.za.
