Five A1 print ready poster graphics on different applications of biotechnology in rural areas have been produced by Rapid Phase through this PUB grant to educate and raise discussion around biotechnology.
The first two posters of this series are currently only available electronically and in English. Development of the remaining three posters is underway and all five will be completed, translated (Afrikaans, English, Sotho and Zulu) and printed by end of 2005.
Background
The broad ranging field of Biotechnology offers potential benefits to rural communities but some of these technologies come with potential and perceived dangers. By their very nature rural communities are often severely impoverishment and have poor knowledge of modern technologies and the related social, ethical and moral issues. The need exists to empower rural communities to take advantage of the benefits of modern biotechnology while placing them in a position to make informed choices about which technologies are appropriate and desirable in ensuring sustainability.
The Rural Biotechnology Poster series was conceptualised to address some of these needs. A number of Biotechnology applications have the well-being of rural communities at heart, while others could have positive spin-offs for rural communities. The posters aim to educate on the principles behind a number of biotechnology interventions, and wherever possible help people to place themselves in a position to benefit from the industries surrounding these technologies.
Objectives
- The objectives of this poster series are to:
- Raise awareness of biotechnology and the related social, ethical and moral issues and to stimulate dialogue and debate to enable informed decision-making.
- Show how various biotechnologies are already part of rural people's lives and to use the opportunities to increase levels of Science and Technology awareness and understanding.
- Provide, where possible, support to the school curriculum, and
- Assist wherever possible in making rural communities aware of possible income generating opportunities in the biotechnology field or related industries.
Evaluation
Upon completion and prior to printing, each poster is being evaluated through focus groups to assess the pitch, content and design of the poster. Where relevant, this feedback is incorporated and the poster modified to better meet the needs of the users.
If you would like to receive copies of these posters or to request permission to reproduce them at your institute/organisation while ensuring due credit is given to the PUB programme and the Department of Science and Technology, please contact info@pub.ac.za.
