Summary:

South-South Collaborations in Health Biotechnology analyses the scope and success of collaborations between Southern Hemisphere countries in the growing field of Health Biotechnology. Researchers present case studies from Brazil, South Africa, China, India and Egypt. It examines collaborations between governments as well as between private companies. One chapter focuses on the how collaboration between South Africa and other African countries is promoting biotechnology in Africa, while another examines China and India’s role in African biotechnology development. The book finds that although collaboration is low, it is growing, particularly through entrepreneurship. Most collaboration focuses on shared health needs, and has contributed to improved manufacturing capacity as well as cheaper health products and services. The book points out that this sector is still crippled by a lack of resources, but also suggests ways for developing and emerging economies to move forward in promoting South-South collaboration for improved global health.
